The 3rd Annual NALC Fashion show, April 2008, Albuquerque, NM
I was invited to be part of the Native American Leadership Council for Highland High
School.  This show was the first show I did after gaining some distance from the
organizations that felt they owned my talents.  This was well before I started Nizhoni Way
Models and a lot of the models in the show were rounded up at the last minute by
model
Deidra Plainfeather.  I was very grateful she was able to round up some amazing
models.  In usual form, aspiring models heard
Nizhoni  Way Apparel needs models, and
they came running.   The people in attendance and organizers agreed that I was the
fashion shows highlight.  They immediately booked me for  the 4th Annual but I was not
able to take part in the show because I was working on the law part of my business
degree.  For me,  this show taught me that you can overcome adversity and people's
jealousy.   It really taught me that I had the strength to stand on my own.  If it were not
for the subsequent successes of the shows that followed, I would not have had the
courage to start Nizhoni Way models and move into Fashion show production-which I
received training for in design school.
This was the first show done off the rez after the formation of Nizhoni Way
Apparel
.  The original CORE group contained 15 Native American newbies.  I
trained and developed these ladies and was very proud of them when they
showcased at the Heard Museum for the
HOOP of Learning Center  at my old
alma matter,
Mesa Community College.   The newly inducted NWA models got
their first taste of model competition at this show and realized that they were
entering a field that is filled with a lot of jealousy.  The designs were a hit and
people loved the show.  I was happy to have been part of the show.  It was a
welcome return after my one year hiatus from the Native American Fashion
Scene to return to school.
